Safety Tips for Space Heaters
- Condominium sidewalks, breezeways and stairs may ice over, use extreme caution when outdoors.
- Stock up on essential food supplies and medicine.
- Dress in layers, multiple layers will help insulate form drafts. Layer a thin long sleeve shirt (preferably a wicking material) with a wool or polyester long sleeve shirt or sweater, followed by a lightweight indoor jacket or covering. Each layer provides an area of insulation where warm air is contained. Wool socks provide more insulation than cotton socks.
- When going outdoors add an insulated jacket with a waterproof exterior.
- Create an emergency kit. In case the power goes out, or you are unable to leave your home, prepare an emergency kit with items such as a battery-powered radio, back up cell phone charging battery, flashlights, extra batteries, candles, and matches or lighter.
Protecting Your Pets
- Pet owners should take special precautions with their animals when temperatures drop. It’s best to keep all pets indoors and limit their time outside.
- Cats curl up next to almost anything to stay warm, including your vehicles engine. Before you turn your vehicle, check under the vehicle, make noise, or tap on the horn.
Protecting Your Pipes
Frozen pipes can lead to a big mess, here is how to avoid weather-related calamities at home:
- Allow a small trickle of water to run overnight, preferably through a faucet on an outside wall.
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets so warmer air can circulate below the sinks.
Protecting Your Plants
- When temperatures are below 32, flowers and plants will die.
- Bring your smaller container plants, especially succulents, indoors. Mulch or cover outdoor plants with straw, blankets or cardboard.
- To prevent heat loss from sides of containers, push together large outdoor pots and wrap the bases with plastic, burlap or a blanket.
- Watering your plants before it gets cold will also help.
Safety Tips for Space Heaters
- Place space heaters on solid and flat surfaces. Also, make sure your space heater has an automatic shut off in case it tips over.
- Check space heaters for cracked or damaged cords and plugs.
- Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets, don’t use an extension cord or power strip.
- Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from portable space heater.
- Create a “kid-free zone” three feet from open fires and space heaters.
- Never use your oven to heat your home.
- Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
- Test your smoke alarms.
